Why I Started Shop Local First and Why Your Business Belongs in It

A customer walks down Water Street in Kerrville, pokes their head into a boutique they’ve never visited, and leaves with a bag full of handmade goods and a smile on their face. That’s the magic of local business real people serving real people. But every year, more and more dollars that could stay right here in our towns are drifting off to bigbox chains and online giants who will never sponsor a local Little League team or donate to the high school band fundraiser.

That’s why I started Shop Local First. I believe the heart of the Texas Hill Country beats in its small shops on Main Street in Fredericksburg, tucked behind the courthouse square in Boerne, or nestled near Market Square in San Antonio. And I’ve seen what happens when those shops link arms instead of standing alone. Sales go up. Neighbors show up. Towns thrive. Shop Local First is more than just a directory.

It’s a movement. When your business signs up, it becomes part of a story a community-wide effort to keep money circulating right here, where it does the most good. Our program highlights local businesses like yours, getting them in front of customers who are actively looking to support small and shop with intention. We also created something special: the Shop Local First card sponsorship. These cards are given to our local heroes teachers, nurses, firefighters, veterans and those cardholders are eager to find shops offering small perks or thank-you discounts.

They come through your doors with a sense of appreciation, loyalty, and the kind of community spirit you can’t buy with an ad campaign. The best part? Businesses that join aren’t just signing up for a listing they’re stepping into a network. We host events, promote each other, and tell a bigger story together than we ever could alone. When a shopper sees the Shop Local First sticker on your door, they know they’re walking into a place that supports their town, their kids, their way of life.

If you're a shop owner who’s poured your heart into your storefront, who cares deeply about your town and your neighbors, I invite you to join us. This isn’t about competition it’s about connection. And I truly believe that when we put our community first, business follows. We’re building something meaningful. One store. One shopper. One shared belief that the Hill Country is worth investing in.

Let’s keep it local. Let’s grow it together. Join us at shoplocalfirst.site
