What Makes Enchanted Rock Speak?

The mystery is real. The explanation is in the stone.

Enchanted Rock

A granite dome is an unlikely storyteller. Yet Enchanted Rock has long attracted accounts of groans, creaks and an atmosphere that seems larger than the landscape itself.

The sound. Temperature change can cause thick granite sheets to expand and contract against one another, producing reported creaks and groans. A physical explanation does not make the place less remarkable.

The smaller mystery. Shallow pools on the granite support specialized life, including tiny freshwater fairy shrimp. Their eggs can survive dry periods, so apparent puddles may be habitat.

Go with curiosity: check reservations, current alerts and closing times; carry water; and use permitted routes. Science and wonder can share the same landscape.
