There is a particular moment before guests arrive when a table seems to hold more than plates. We hope the food will be ready, the conversation easy, and the people we love at home. Sometimes those hopes become so large that we forget the simplest purpose of the gathering: to receive one another.
The Christian practice of hospitality asks something quieter than a perfect holiday. It asks whether there is room for another person in our attention. Welcome begins when we set aside the need to manage every impression and become willing to listen.
An invitation need not be grand. Offer a specific afternoon for coffee. Ask a neighbor to join a short outing. Take a simple meal to someone who has asked for help.
The table does not have to be perfect. Let there be room.
