The appeal of an apple cake is easy to understand: it asks you to slow down long enough to put something warm on the table. Country Living’s September apple-cake feature offered that seasonal nudge. For a Hill Country version of the idea, the starting point can be a real place rather than a borrowed recipe: Love Creek Orchards’ Apple Store in Medina.
At 14024 State Highway 16 North, the store and bakery center their offerings on pie, ice cream, strudels, turnovers, cookies, breakfast breads, jams, jellies and apple butter. That makes a useful stop whether you want dessert for the drive or a jar to take home. The business describes itself as a family affair and emphasizes the country feel of a visit. Take that at face value, without assuming that every apple item on the shelf came from fruit harvested there on the day you arrive.
Make the food the reason for the stop
Choose one thing to eat while it is fresh and one thing that travels well. Pie or ice cream invites a pause; apple butter or preserves can carry the flavor home. If you have a particular product in mind, call ahead. A bakery case changes, and a seasonal orchard can never promise the same fruit availability every week of the year.
The store lists its bakery hours as 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Its Patio Cafe lists 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with burgers, sandwiches and other prepared food, so a visitor planning lunch should not assume the café opens with the store. The published address and phone number are on the business’s own site; check them again before leaving, especially around holidays or in poor weather.
What makes this outing distinct from a generic fall baking project is its Medina setting. The road into town, the store’s working bakery and a modest sit-down break are the experience. There is no need to promise a pick-your-own day or a harvest date that has not been confirmed. Fresh apples and orchard activities should be checked directly with the operator if they are the reason for your trip.
A jar of apple butter can later become the simplest dessert accompaniment at home, spooned beside a plain slice of cake or stirred into breakfast. That is a serving idea, not a tested HCVM recipe. The visit itself supplies the local story.
