October offers a useful question: what deserves a place in the garden now? A bed of greens, a better layer of mulch or a notebook filled with observations can be enough.
Walk before you shop. Notice which bed receives sustained sunlight and which corner stays wet. A garden you see and visit often is easier to know.
Texas A&M AgriLife lists lettuce, spinach, radishes, beets and turnips among frost-tolerant crops. Planting dates vary across Texas; use county Extension advice for your area.
Keep it covered. Mulch slows moisture loss and helps control weeds. Check soil before watering, and leave room to notice what changes from week to week.
